Virginia law says that we have to keep a dog for 5 days (10 days if the dog has a collar) so that the owner can claim it before we can put the dog up for adoption. If you are interested in a particular dog before its available date please contact us.

Tappahannock Essex County Animal Shelter (TECAS) does not do same day adoptions. You must fill in an Adoption Application Form. Your application will be reviewed and we will telephone the applicant, usually within 72 hours, to let you know that your application has been approved or denied.
